As London rioters torched a building, two patrol cars and a double-decker bus in yesterday, fashion's current obsession with sixties fashion in the midst of global economic and religious turmoil underscores the optimism of the sixties, which also faced its own onslaught of social upheavals.

With optimism in shorter supply these days, perhaps we need an old-fashioned jolt of sixties 'can do' willpower and willingness to fight among the smart set.  We join Tatler in asking 'Is There Anybody Out There?'
