Sensual Dames Love Stockings & Garter Belts from Secrets & Lace

Count Anne as a woman who loves wearing stockings and a garter belt, at work or on an evening out.

Her introduction to Secrets in Lace came with a present over dinner a few years ago. What man would give a woman a garter belt and stockings on a second date? Try a recently-divorced investment banker. So bold a gesture -- but still rather sexy, you must admit.

The Pamela Couture Collection includes five different designs of stockings, from Swiss dot to sheer styles with seams up the back. The 100 percent nylon thigh highs (all of which must be worn with a garter belt) retail between $29 and $39 at

Secrets and Lace caught our eye this morning, thinking about its wide range of retro-attitude, screen-star lingerie. There was more lingerie after the garter belt. We're not actually thinking about Pamela Anderson screen-star status but Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor -- the dames.

That's a good way to put it -- Secrets in Lace designs lingerie for dames, who are a different kind of bombshell. Not as dreamy, not assuming that Prince Charming will carry us over the threshold of happiness. We probably are older and more experienced women -- career women, moms with kids, perhaps a divorce in our resume, or a strong commitment to light a fire under the man we love.

We're sexy, brainiac, Rock of Gibralter women -- the kind you can count on when the chips are down, a partner and not a major responsibility, women who have this confounding belief that lots of sex is good for a marriage and beds aren't made for dogs, cats and kids every night of the week.

It this attitude makes us old-fashioned women, so be it -- as long as you understand we support women's liberation all the way. Amazing how an image of Pamela Swiss Dot stockings gets our fantasies going -- and on a weekday no less.

It just may be time to rummage through Anne's self-photography project. Now that she's gone back to NIA dance lessons, the earth is beginning to shake beneath our feet.

Melvin Sokolsky: Magical Realism NOWNESS

60s fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky floated models down the Seine long before the age of digital, photographic enhancements. Now living in New York, Sokolsky is the subject of the Royal Monceau's new exhibition Rétrospective, which spans the artist’s five-decade career.

Curated by Michel Mallard and Hervé Mikaeloff, the show demonstrates Sokolsky's influence on modern photographers like Ryan McGinley or Craig McDean. Asked about his infamous 'bubble' photos, Skolosky explains that his eureka moment sprang from a painting by Hieronymus Bosch.

'The Garden of Earthly Delights'

'The Garden of Earthly Delights' by Hieronymus Bosch; owned by El Prado MuseumLate 15th century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch produced several triptychs. Among his most famous is The Garden of Earthly Delights.

This painting depicts paradise with Adam and Eve and many wondrous animals on the left panel, the earthly delights with numerous nude figures and tremendous fruit and birds on the middle panel, and hell with depictions of fantastic punishments of the various types of sinners on the right panel.

When the exterior panels are closed the viewer can see, painted in grisaille, God creating the Earth.

Inside the triptych 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' , the bubble motif continues.

As an artist Melvin Sokolsky is inspired by his dream life and writing down his dreams upon waking up from sleep. Incredibly visual, the photographer's impression of 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' was embedded in his unconscious mind.

Doutzen Kroes Will Blast Into Space As Dance4Life Activist

Victoria's Secret Angel Doutzen Kroes will really spread her wings in 2014. Rarely credited by Victoria's Secret, doing good is sexy, and many of the Victoria's Secret women are involved in significant activist and philanthropy projects around the world.

Doutzen Kroes will be riding the first Dutch commercial flight to space, working for the HIV and AIDS awareness group dance4life. Kroes will join 14 other passengers including DJ Armin van Buuren and Martin Schroder on the trip.

Erica Terpstra, member of the dance4life advisory board, will also be one of the pioneering astronauts! An extra ticket for the historic adventure will be auctioned on July 2nd, at an exclusive friends4life dinner prior to Sensation in the Amsterdam Arena.

Scandinavia & Smart Sensuality Values

When the subject is values, it's very predictable that a Dutch commercial company would incorporate philanthropy in its corporate mission for takeoff. These are the Smart Sensuality values that Anne talks about.

They are also Cultural Creative values, but when one adds Doutzen Kroes to the mix, we're talking Smart Sensuality people: smart, sexy people with heart.

Just this morning, we posted a list of the happiest countries in the world, responding to a Psychology Today article about America's falling rates of happiness. The Netherlands is #11 on our list of 10, a 2010 analysis that incorporates multiple global survey ratings on life satisfaction, gender equality, class-based economics, and tax rates.

Scandinavian countries and nations like The Netherlands -- often considered to be part of Scandinavia, even though it is not geographically -- express business values that embrace global philanthropy and activism. Not nearly as materialistic as America, both business and citizens have a different view of what constitutes a good life. Kisses across the Atlantic. Olivia Wilde | Flaunt #112 | Helping Out in Haiti

'Tron' actress Olivia Wilde is one hot lady on Flaunt Magazine Issue #112. Wilde is testing her Smart Sensuality wings, trying to assist in Haiti.

"Our goal is also to encourage a sense of nationalism and pride that will stop the brain drain so people can get educated, go to med school, or any other kind of school elsewhere, but have a sense of responsibility to come back there and help there own country. That's woven into the fabric of our curriculum," Olivia Wilde explains, talking about her work opening a new school in Port-Au-Prince.

The more we read, Olivia Wilde has been very active in Haiti. Her story will continue at AOC.

Chanel Dressing Room Movie Suppresses Sensuality Under the Weight of Material Desire

Updated June 27, 2010

In the 1990s, we had a different fashion image of women, one much healthier. I worked with three of these models in the Victoria's Secret fashion shows. All have busts and butts, in varying degrees. None of them look like concentration camp survivors and all agree that they wouldn't be hired as models today . . . except that they are.

When I wrote this piece on Karl Lagerfeld last April 2009, the Fall 2009 Ralph Lauren Photoshop commentary and Karl's comments about fat, potato-chip eating mommys weren't the big brouhaha they became.

We must also remember that luxury fashion is moving East to China and also India, where women are significantly thinner. Luxury fashion imagery will probably become more challenging for American women in the coming years.

My commentary in this original article is how Karl inserts himself into the dressing room action, telling the actress how to behave and what to do. The video symbolized for me the negative relationship between fashion designers and women -- as well as couples.

Karl cultivates conflict between the woman and guy, so that he and his Chanel products are her love. This is EXACTLY what fashion has become for women in the 21st century.

Karl replaces the lover as her man. Fashion is the new sex. Lara Stone does exactly as she is told.

In reality, fashion is a poor replacement for healthy love, but this is exactly what "Sex and the City" gave us. Stilettos are better than sex, as long as a man is in charge -- in this case a man who has absolutely no interest in women's sexuality. He exists to suppress it -- which is why fashion models have been desexualized in the world of some fashion designers.

It's so great when we have these moments of total clarity about the real relationship we women have with fashion. Call it fashion monotheism at its best.

Original post written April 2009

Is it just me, or does the fabulously talented genius of Karl Lagerfeld seem a bit off kilter in this intimate look at life in the retail dressing room?

I find the scene (also in need of editing) not sensual at all, but a Modern tribute to she who has the most baubles is the happiest girl . . .or not. I'm struck by the self-absorption of the scene, and I believe in the positive powers of narcissism.

There is no erotic energy in this young Lara Stone woman. Her sexality is suppresed under the things that consume her attention.

You are viewing Modern consumption and vanity at its best. I do think that Karl Lagerfeld is a genius but not here. He's hitting the wrong note for this moment. The brand should support the erotic moment, rather than being the focus.
